Rachelle, Perryn and I were out shopping this past weekend. We just walked into a store and had to go up the escalator to get to the second floor. Without thinking anything of it, I headed to the escalator ... with Perryn right in front of me.
See where this is going yet?
It didn't occur to me that Perryn had never ridden an escalator before and the mechanics of such are not exactly intuitive for a two-year-old. As luck would have it, he stood right on the seam between two steps and lost his footing as the flat surface separated and began to rise at different rates. Luckily, he didn't go toppling down the steps. He just sort of stumbled in front of me. Then as he tried to stand up, he instinctively tried to support himself by putting his hands on the side wall. Of course, the side wall wasn't moving, so he kind of lost his balance again. From that point, I was able to help him up and off the escalator.
In the end, it wasn't that big of a deal - no boo-boos or anything. But I sure felt bad about the incident.
